Son loves it!

My two year old loves to stand in front of the mural and tell me what every object is. It is a great addition to his “train” room.

Reliable Lighting

I’ve used several of these light fixtures for about nine years, and they’ve proven to be reliable and a source of good garden lighting. They’re easily adjustable to focus on specific plants or trees. I’ve found them quite good. My only concern is that the contact connections often loosen up from the main feeder wire. I’ve chosen to hard wire each unit when installing them.

Bad Quality. Dont buy it.

Im sad to report that I gave this to my trucker friend who was here overnight. She plugged it in as instructed it worked ONCE and stopped. Please if you have a friend that drives buy a higher quality product than this one. It was so bad that I didn’t even exchange it… threw it out.

This device has it all!

Short of high-tech validation testing, my use of this device resulted in all positives regarding function. The only negative (below) doesn’t affect the device functionality one bit.

POSITIVES:
==========

- Enables the obvious use of 7 USB ports where your PC probably doesn’t have that many built-in. These extra ports can be conveniently setup on your table top so you don’t have to reach down to (or behind) your PC to connect dynamic devices like cameras and cell phones.

- Supports USB 1.1 and 2.0 speeds simultaneously. In other words, USB 2.0 devices don’t slow down just because you plug in a slower/older USB 1.1 device.

- Works with or without the power cord.

- When using the power cord, this unit charges USB devices even if not connected to a PC. My daughter wants another one in her room just for this purpose.

- Small enough to include in a laptop bag (though this is not how I use it).

- Excellent price for all this capability.

NEGATIVES:
==========

- The physical device is light weight. If it was huge and heavy (like maybe a TV or a PC), you could plug in USB cables with one hand. Unless you screw this device down, you’ll need two hands. Also, it won’t stay put and may twist or flop around if you pull or twist the connected cables.

18v flashlight replacement bulb

i have a ryobi flashlight that needed a new bulb & the replacement bulb is the dewalt one (that’s what home depot told me).
but i was turned away when i saw the bulbs are $8/pair…i thought what a rip off…so i went online & i saw makita had an 18v bulb (p/n A90261) that was similar to the dewalt. and the best part is it’s $3.50/pair & i found at a website w/ a $0.01 shipping…couldn’t beat that. i got the bulbs last night & it fits in my ryobi flashlight w/ out a problem. whaooo whoooo!!!

Great other than sub-par LCD

Pros:
Good specs for a mid-grade notebook
Comforable & quiet keyboard
Upward facing speakers
HDMI output
Aesthetically pleasing

Cons:
LCD is dark even at full brightness
Fan comes on intermitently every 4-5 mins
Heavy (6.9 pounds)
Low battery life (~2.5hrs on light usage)

Review:
I bought this at Bestbuy the weekend of Black Friday ($649.99). It’s rare to find a mid-grade notebook that has dedicated graphics, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, GigE & 802.11n connectivity, and a 1600×900 display. Even at MSRP, the specs are pretty good for the price. The keyboard is very quiet and comfortable to type on. The touchpad is a decent size but the 2 buttons are hard to click (I generally use the touchpad tap gestures). The max volume on the speakers are pretty good and they actually face up. Many lower end notebooks have them facing down going away from your ear and also gets muffled if you put it on your bed. The HDMI is great for connecting to an external display. Unfortunately, the integrated glossy 1600×900 xbrite-eco display looks pretty bad. Even on max brightness, the LCD is not very bright. The viewing angles are bad. Normal sized text is hard to read unless you’re looking at the LCD straight-on. This is my first experience with extended usage on a Sony xbrite-eco display and I’m a bit disappointed. I haven’t used a TN-panel in 3 years, so I am a bit spoiled on monitors. I’m also very conscious of computer noise. The fan comes on and off frequently and cannot be controlled by 3rd party software (This is true of all Sony Vaios). I checked this out using HWMonitor. The PC idles around 50C. When the CPU gets stressed to 59C, the fan starts spinning and cooling the CPU down until 51C, then stops. This is a regular pattern that occurs maybe every 4-5 mins, but on the other hand, many notebook cooling systems are the same way. The good thing is this never becomes one of those lap-scorchers. This thing is quite heavy at 6.9 pounds. The big LCD and dedicated graphics add weight and also trim down the 4400mAH battery’s life. I get 2.5hrs on light usage. I think this could have used a bigger battery, but I think Sony didn’t want to have to market a 7 pound+ computer. There is still pre-installed garbage software that you’ll want to uninstall but it’s not as bad as it used to be. This is currently my main computer and I usually have it “docked” to my external S-IPS Dell monitor, external keyboard/mouse, and constantly charged, so I don’t feel the effect of the dull LCD, weight, or battery life.

Overall, I still really like the computer. To get similar specs elsewhere, you’d have to spend $1000+. It looks very sleek and has the Sony “Vaio” branding if you’re into that. With a 16″+ laptop, weight and lowered battery life are a given. The hardware is very good other than the LCD and the cooling sytem is a little bit below average in my opinion. I’d say if this looks good on paper to you, head down to a brick and mortar to check out the LCD brightness, viewing angles, and weight before making your decision.

Quiet, Quick, and Easy

The Seagate FreeAgent Deks 1TB for Mac (ST310005FJA105-RK) is a 1TB external drive Seagate is marketing for the Mac fanbase (though the drive could be re-formatted for Windows). I purchased the drive because my iTunes Music folder had soared to 120GB in size, and I needed to move the folder permanently to an external drive to free up space on my internal drive.

The drive is 2.2 lbs and measures 7.28″ in H x 1.48″ in W x 5.98″ in L . It comes with an AC adaptor, a Firewire 800 cable, a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable (for those with older iMacs, like me, who only have 6-pin Firewire 400 ports), and a USB cable. The FreeAgent Desk itself sits on a small white stand with a rubber pad on the bottom. Unless I’ve missed something, the stand cannot be removed from the external drive itself. As a result, it must be placed upright. Seagate provides a 5 year limited warranty, so keep your receipt. The FreeAgent Desk is formatted for Mac and Time Machine ready. The brushed steel exterior, plastic white trim, and white cabling complement the iMac’s appearance. The cache size isn’t readily ascertainable, though the spin speed is 7200 RPM. After taking it out of the box, the FreeAgent Desk requires only two steps to set it up. First, plug the AC adaptor into the drive and power supply. Second, connect the drive to your iMac using the appropriate cable. I chose the Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable because Firewire transfers (even for a Firewire 400 port) are reportedly faster than a USB 2.0 transfer, and because I need my USB ports for other devices. Because I plan to keep the drive constantly connected, I placed it only about 6 inches from the computer itself.

Mac OSX Leopard immediately recognized the drive. The preferences window for Time Machine, which I hadn’t used before, popped up on its own and asked me whether I wanted to use the external drive as the backup drive for Time Machine. I did, but before I completed the Time Machine setup, I wanted to move my iTunes Music folder so the first Time Machine backup would mirror the internal drive as I wanted it to be, not as it was. I turned off Time Machine in the “preferences” window, printed out and carefully followed the instructions I’d previously found online for moving my iTunes Music folder to an external drive, and waited for the 120GB transfer to complete. I didn’t time the transfer, but it took between 30 minutes and 1 hour or so. After the transfer was complete and my iMac’s hard drive no longer had dangerously low space, I re-opened Time Machine preferences, turned it “on,” and allowed it to do its magic. After heading out of the room to watch a Christmas movie with my wife and children, I stopped back in and found Time Machine had already completed two backups to the external drive (now only 57 GB of data).

As other reviews have noted, the drive, when active, has a white light emanating from the bottom of the unit, creating a pool of light under the drive and on top of the foot of the stand. Also, the Seagate logo on the front of the drive is backlit by a white light. Both lights go off when the drive goes to sleep. The drive is extremely quiet. It sits on my desktop near my computer and generally cannot be heard. I can hear it spin up as it comes out of sleep mode (a faint, high-pitched sound, followed by a click), and, if I listen closely, can hear a low background hum after it finishes spinning up and begins actively working. I was concerned about noise level since the drive sits directly on my desktop, but so far the noise level is fine.

My media (both music and video) streams perfectly from the FreeAgent Desk through iTunes, although there is 3-4 second lag in start time if the FreeAgent Desk is in sleep mode when I click “play” in iTunes. Once the external drive spins up, the media plays as if I were running it off the internal drive. We also have an Apple TV which is synced to our iMac, and we were able to play a movie now residing on the FreeAgent Desk drive through Apple TV without a hitch. Now that Apple TV and iTunes are using the iTunes Music folder on the FreeAgent Desk, I can continue adding media without worrying about the amount of disk space it’s taking up on my internal drive.

All in all, a great purchase. Sleek, quiet, and a ton of space. Note: If you use your external hard drive both to back up files (i.e., Time Machine) and to store active files (i.e., iTunes Music folder), just remember that the active files on the external hard drive are not being backed up. You may want to have a plan to ensure these files are backed up as well.

Great Saw, Great Amazon Price!~

I bought this same saw about a year ago at Lowes, I paid something like $150 for it. It’s a great saw, really smooth and comfortable to use. Works great for cutting trim boards, but I’ve also used it as a chop saw to cut 2×6’s, it doesn’t bog down one bit when cutting larger stock. It’s a little heavy, but to me that just means it’s built better. It’s also quiet compared to other miter saws I’ve used. This is definitely a great deal! I’m almost tempted to buy a second as a backup!

Super smooth cuts, even crosscuts.

After trying various other blades, I have found this to be the best all around table saw blade. At first I was skeptical of the high price, but after using it I am convinced that this is the only way to go. Tool tip - Make sure that your blade is sharp. It can be deceiving that although it still feels sharp to the touch, it is not cutting as well as it can. I have used the resharpening service that Forrest provides, and I am extremely impressed with the quality of the service.
